Gamow-Teller transition strengths from Ni leading to Cu were obtained and compared with shell-model predictions in the pf shell using the KB3G and GXPF1A interactions. The calculations with the GXPF1A interaction reproduce the experimental strength distribution much better than the calculations that employed the KB3G interaction, indicating deficiencies in the spin-orbit and protonneutron residual potentials for the latter. The results are important for improving the description of electron-capture rates on nuclei in the iron region, which are important for modeling the late evolution of core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae.

β+ Gamow-Teller transition strengths from 46Ti and stellar electron-capture rates.
The Gamow-Teller strength in the β(+) direction to (46)Sc was extracted via the (46)Ti(t,(3)He + γ) reaction at 115 MeV/u. The γ-ray coincidences served to precisely measure the very weak Gamow-Teller transition to a final state at 991 keV. Although this transition is weak, it is crucial for accurately estimating electron-capture rates in astrophysical scenarios with relatively low stellar den...

We present a novel technique for studying the quenching of shell gaps in exotic isotopes. The method is based on extracting Gamow-Teller (ΔL=0, ΔS=1) transition strengths [B(GT)] to low-lying states from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. These Gamow-Teller strengths are very sensitive to configuration mixing between cross-shell orbitals, and this technique thus provides a...
متن کاملFermi and Gamow-Teller Strength in Charge Exchange with Radioactive Beams
At forward angles, and bombarding energies E > 200 MeV, the (p, n) and (n, p) reactions are thought to be directly proportional to the Gamow-Teller transition strengths in the nuclei. Assuming that this relationship also holds for charge exchange induced by high-energy heavy ions, it would be very useful in studies with radioactive beams. Contrary to this expectation, we show that the determina...
متن کاملComplete 0h̄ω calculations of Gamow-Teller strengths for nuclei in the iron region
Gamow-Teller strengths for selected nuclei in the iron region (A ∼ 56) have been investigated via shell-model Monte Carlo calculations with realistic interactions in the complete fp basis. Results for all cases show significant quenching relative to single-particle estimates, in quantitative agreement with (n, p) data. The J = 1, T = 0 residual interaction and the f7/2–f5/2 spin-orbit splitting...
متن کاملGamow-Teller strengths and electron-capture rates for p f -shell nuclei of relevance for late stellar evolution
Background: Electron-capture reaction rates on medium-heavy nuclei are an important ingredient for modeling the late evolution of stars that become core-collapse or thermonuclear supernovae. The estimation of these rates requires the knowledge of Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the β+ direction. Astrophysical models rely on electron-capture rate tables largely based on theoretical models...

We show that the presently available data on the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength in mid-f p-shell nuclei are proportional to the product of the numbers of valence protons and neutron holes in the full f p-shell. This observation leads to important insights into the mechanism for GT quenching and to a simple parametrization of the Gamow-Teller strengths important for electron capture by f p-shell nuc...
